The Bookshelf Edit

Since starting my new blog, I have tried to make sure it represents me best and that I write about things that I love and really inspire me. Therefore today I want to talk to you all about my favourite books, as I enjoy reading and want to share my love of books with you. So here is a run-down of my top five books and there’s a little bit of everything for you- books you’ll have heard of, some you won’t, romances and true stories.

We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach
After reading We All Looked Up in the summer last year, this book and Tommy Wallach soon became two of my favourite things. The book is based on the lives of four teenagers that allow themselves to be defined by their titles- the athlete, the outcast, the slacker, the overachiever. However, when an asteroid is heading for Earth, it challenges them all to re-think their lives and become who they really are. You follow the stories of each character and finish with an uplifting sense of life. This book encourages you to be yourself and to take advantage of the life you have.
Tommy Wallach is also one of my top writers as his style is very unlike any other author I’ve read. Wallach is such an alternative writer, who often combines his love of making music with writing books- for example, We All Looked Up has its own album! He is also incredible funny and weaves in modern references into his work that makes it so relatable and current. He’s written two books so far, and I’ve loved both, however We All Looked Up is definitely my top pick.

One Million Lovely Letters by Jodi Ann Bickley
One Million Lovely Letters is the true story of Jodi’s life and the challenges she has had to face. When her life was changed by one day, the book follows her struggle and how she overcame it all. Jodi is extremely inspiring and definitely one of my role models in life. This book is moving and brilliant as it inspires you to re-evaluate what you do and why you do it. Jodi’s story made me so grateful for my life and reminded me of the importance of sharing happiness and the power of words. I’d urge you to read this, it will change you.

Heaven by Christoph Marzi
Heaven is the kind of book you flick pass on the bookshelf of your local Waterstones. You probably wont have heard of the author, or know the book, so it probably won’t catch you’re interest. However, this book has been a favourite on my bookshelf for around the last five years and was one of the first proper ‘teen’ novels I ever read. The blurb of this book is what interested me, so what better was to explain it then to share that blurb with you- The night that Heaven lost her heart was cold and moonless. But the blade that sliced it out was warm with her dark blood.... Heaven is described as an urban fantasy, as it mixes the reality of our world with the mysteries of another. It is also a romantic tale and an action-packed adventure as you travel with the characters on a race against time. What really makes this novel is the beautiful writing Marzi creates. I love a bit of description and Marzi has filled Heaven with this, making it so easy for a reader to connect with and, in my opinion, love.

Looking For Alaska by John Green
Following the obsession we all had with The Fault In Our Stars, I decided to read some of John Green’s other books. As an author, he is so loved, so I felt reading some more of his work was a good idea. I’ve read plenty of John Green now but Looking For Alaska is my favourite. Looking For Alaska is an alternative romance, where Pudge- the main character- goes on a mysterious journey- the journey of Alaska.

Divergent by Veronica Roth
If you are a lover of the Divergent films- stop right there, YOU NEED TO READ THE BOOK. I was the same, I watched the film first and loved it, so read the book soon after. I love the Divergent series and it is definitely my favourite series of books I’ve read. It happens in a parallel world, split into factions based on the way you want to live your life- if you’re smart, brave, happy, selfless or fair. When you come to age, you choose the rest of your life based on a test- but what if it doesn’t work? The series follows Tris Prior and as we go on, we learn more about the world around her to. Plus Four- a boy, not a number- is very good-looking.

So those are my top five favourite books. I absolutely love reading, and try to be reading a book all the time (even if it’s only a few pages a night). If you have any recommendations or thoughts on any of these books, then please leave them in the comments below. Let’s have a little book club chat, shall we?
Thank you all for reading, it means a lot to me that you clicked on my page. I hope you all have a fabulous week,

  3. Love picking up some book recommendations!! I read Divergent this year and found it such a good book and loved the first film too, but I didn't really like the second and third so much :/. I really want to read some more of John Green as TFIOS was such a memorable and emotional book, his writing style is superb!
